Up Route 9, past the numerous bus-stop commuters, bear right onto the local lane for Bagel Talk in Old Bridge. It’s in a strip mall (duh). You walk in, and it’s actually pretty nice inside: clean tiles, granite-looking tables, shiny metal accents on the walls, and Boar’s Head meats.
It was 9:15, and felt sleepy after the early morning commuter rush that had probably occurred (they even offer a “Commuter Special,” Hot Coffee and a bagel for a reduced price). It was just us and several Vietnam veterans. Our server was courteous and kind.
And then there were the bagels…Oh boy, this is Middlesex County, after all. It’s hard to find a good bagel here (got any tips? kindly send ‘em our way), which is ludicrous, considering that this county is home to our great University, Rutgers. What are out-of-state students going to think about New Jersey bagels??
THE BAGELS had an oddly homogenous texture, like the dough had been stirred for too long. The egg bagel with Nutella cream cheese was a positive innovation though, the Nutella cc being light and sweet, but not too sweet. The everything bagel with vegetable cream cheese was “average,” with large chunks of vegetables instead of the more flavorful shreds of vegetables.
News 12 NJ played a story about Bon Jovi accepting the ALS Ice Bucket challenge. This is appropriate considering how close to his hometown of Sayreville we were.
We left Bagel Talk deflated again in our quest to find an excellent bagel in Middlesex.
